A Scent of Nostalgia

Growing up, I watched bottles of perfume locked in a cabinet.

My grandfather’s sister, Lola Inday, had a vast collection of various perfumes; some were even empty bottles. I never understood why she held on to them until now.

I’ve always loved perfumes, too. My collection is a mix of old favorites and newer finds. But living with #hemiplegicmigraine has changed how I enjoy fragrances.

Still, I hold on to them.

Because a scent can bring back memories. It can take you back to a particular time in your life, remind you of someone, or bring back feelings you thought you’d forgotten.

Dior Poison reminds me of my mother when she was younger, and every time I get a whiff of that scent, it transports me back to when I was a kid, watching her get ready to go someplace.

And now, I wonder if that’s why Lola Inday held on to her perfumes, too.

Maybe she understood something I didn’t as a child. Some things mean more to us than their actual purpose. They become part of our memories, our experiences, and the different seasons of our lives.

I may not be able to wear all my perfumes anymore, but I’m not quite ready to let them go.

Now, I understand. ❤️
